![]() We have been reviewing, testing, and ranking browsers for the past six years and this guide contains the latest recommendations for 2023. Even if I have many years of experience with using the internet behind me, I can't consider myself a geek. A secure browser that protects your privacy is a critical tool for staying safe online and keeping your data secure from third parties. Many people here often seem to have a hard time understanding what it means to just be a user, not a geek. ![]() It was Windows which had just started up again after a Windows Defender offline scan (a special scan for which Windows apparently has to reboot the computer), and Windows did this because I had made Waterfox my standard browser.īut Windows obviously doesn't like this even if in theory it is giving you this option. So why doesn't it do this when launched by the launcher?īesides, I didn't start Waterfox myself at the time I was reporting about in this thread. It's what it would do.īut the launcher launches Waterfox.exe, which normally DOES look for its profile folder in AppData. So you think it is actually the launcher itself, not the Waterfox executable, which tells Waterfox to look for its profile in the PortableApps folder. ![]() For information on how to build Waterfox from the source code and create patches see the quick reference. waterfox.exe is not, and will leave data on the computer. An explanation of the Waterfox Source Code Directory Structure and links to project pages can be found at the Directory Structure documents. I don't really see a problem here, although someone more knowledgeable could very well prove me wrong. Waterfox would have found it there and run as normal, without adding files to the computer. In contrast, if WaterfoxPortable was launched, it would have told Waterfox to look for its profile in its PortableApps folder. Waterfox isn't natively a portable application, so on launch, it acted like the non-portable version- looked for a profile folder in AppData, found none, and launched the "welcome" screen because of the newly created profile. I've never checked for leftover files in AppData after using Waterfox Portable, but it does indeed run off a USB drive, with no settings saved outside of that drive- as long as you run the portable version, of course.įrom reading the thread you linked, it looks like you launched the normal waterfox.exe executable, not the PortableApps launcher. I use Waterfox Portable myself, being on a college campus where I use whatever computer is most convenient. Waterfox is not a fork that happened several years ago.
